Bay View Association — A Chautauqua Community on Little Traverse Bay

Memorial Garden

Policies & Procedures

The Bay View Memorial Garden was established in 1994 as a repository for the ashes (cremains) of Bay View members, their families, and friends of Bay View. It is consecrated for all, including those of the Roman Catholic faith.

The garden is under the jurisdiction of the Bay View Trustees and the Bay View Memorial Garden Committee. All ceremonies to take place in the garden must be approved and scheduled with the Bay View Business Office, 1715 Encampment Avenue, Bay View.

Fees for Placement

Bay View members and their relatives$400.00
Non–Bay View members$800.00

Advance payments, as part of pre-planning, are welcome. Fees are payable at the Bay View Business Office.

Placement Procedure

At least two witnesses and a member of the Memorial Garden Committee must be present at the time of placement of ashes. A member of the clergy usually presides; if desired, the names of Bay View clergy can be obtained from the Bay View Association Business Office.

The cremains are removed from the container and placed directly into the soil, where they become part of the life of the garden.

Records

At the time of placement, two certificates of placement will be signed by the witnesses and the person presiding. One certificate will go to the family. The other will go into a file in the Bay View Archives created for the individual. A commemorative page will be placed in a Book of Memory located in the narthex of Crouse Memorial Chapel, next to the Bay View Post Office. The name will also be entered in a Book of Memory in the Archives.

Perpetual Care

Funds accrued from placement fees are invested in the Memorial Garden Endowment Fund to provide perpetual care in the future. Interest from the Endowment Fund is available annually for the Memorial Garden Committee to cover the expenses of routine maintenance, replacement of plants, and other related expenses. In addition, donations are often contributed in memory or in honor of loved ones to assist in maintaining the garden. Further information can be obtained from the Bay View Business Office.

Volunteer Gardeners

Volunteers are welcome to weed and manicure the garden on Saturday mornings during the summer between the hours of 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. All are welcome, regardless of expertise or gardening experience.

Restrictions

Parking

When appropriate, please park in the open shoreline area below the garden and use the stone steps to access the garden. When necessary, a limited number of cars can be parked in the Bay View Inn parking lot near the garden.
